Summary: California man who was convicted of the 1991 murders of two nurses and an elderly woman at a Los Angeles retirement home, whose death sentence made nationwide headlines in 2002 when he had volunteered to be executed at the hands of a gas chamber (the last person executed in a gas chamber was Walter LeGrande in Arizona in 1999) but his execution date was later halted by a judge on grounds of "cruel and unusual punishment" protests from the anti-death penalty coalition.
