Summary: retired pipefitter who was hospitalized in critical condition at an intensive care unit for two months from chemical burns he contracted in the water near his Back Bay home while struggling through the surge with his wife Judy Collins who died the day of the storm during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina tropical cyclone that struck the southeastern United States and killed at least 1,245 other people during the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic season as the storm caused severe destruction along the U.S. Gulf Coast from central Florida to Texas due to the storm surge and levee failure before making its second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in southeast Louisiana in late August 2005, in which it was one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane.
