Summary: research assistant in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA who had suffered from second- and third-degree burns over 40 percent of her body from a December 29 laboratory fire in the Molecular Science building, in which an unconfirmed description of the accident said that she was drawing tert-butyl lithium (t-BuLi) from a bottle into a syringe when the plunger came out of the syringe barrel and the chemical (which ignites spontaneously in air) splashed onto her sweater and gloves and set them on fire while she was wearing safety glasses but no lab coat.
