Summary: British journalist and writer who worked for The Guardian, The Times and The Daily Telegraph during his long career as a foreign correspondent in Tokyo, Japan, and who also wrote the book Stalin's Spy: Richard Sorge And The Tokyo Ring (1996), about a German journalist who spied for the Soviet Union from Tokyo until he was arrested and hung the year before the Japanese surrender at the end of the Second World War.
