Summary: first-grade schoolteacher at Middle School Number One in Russia's North Caucasus region who had been hospitalized in extremely critical condition from severe burns combined with multiple gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries caused by mine explosions suffered in the September 2004 Beslan school hostage crisis that had lasted for three days when a group of armed Chechen-led Islamist separatist militants attacked and took more than 1,200 children and adults hostage on the first day of school until the terrorists detonated a bomb inside the packed gymnasium precipitating a firefight between hostage-takers and Russian security forces, in which more than 300 civilians including 186 children were killed during the siege.
