Rev. John Cross
Summary: pastor of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, a haven for civil rights activities, who dug through the rubble of his Alabama church looking for survivors of the 1963 bombing, then presided over a funeral for some of the youngest victims of civil rights-era violence, in which a bomb went off during preparations for a youth service and killed four little black girls, but it took 39 years to convict and imprison all three former Ku Klux Klansmen responsible for the blast.
