Summary: former governor of North Sumatra, Indonesia from 1988 to 1998 who later became a member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) since 2004, but who was reportedly hospitalized in critical condition after being seriously injured in the plane crash of Mandala Airlines Flight 091 on September 5, 2005 that killed 150 people including his successor Rizal Nurdin and 49 other people on the ground when the Boeing 737-200 aircraft carrying 112 passengers and five crew members crashed and exploded in a heavily populated residential area in Medan, Indonesia shortly after takeoff from Polonia International Airport while he was in the official travel to present in the sudden meeting with newly Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta at the time, in which it became the third-deadliest air disaster to have occurred in the past month since the loss of West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 and Helios Airways Flight 522 earlier in August of that year.
