Summary: British lawyer and founder of Amnesty International who began his human rights campaign as a boy in support of Spanish civil war and Jews fleeing Hitler's Germany when he set up Amnesty International in 1961 at age 40 after reading an article about the arrest and imprisonment of two students in a cafe in Lisbon, Portugal who had drunk a toast to liberty, and who had initially envisioned AI as a one-year campaign but it later became the world's largest independent human rights organization, in which it now has more than 1.8 million members and supporters worldwide.
