football player and star defensive linebacker at Arizona State University who was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year in 1997 leading the Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl, who graduated summa cum laude in December 1997 with a marketing degree and a 3.84 grade-point average, who played four seasons in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, where he broke the franchise record for tackles with 223 in 2000, who was so affected by the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S. that he walked away from a $3.6 million contract with the Cardinals in 2002 to join the Army (he planned to return to the NFL in three years), and who was serving as an Army Rangers soldier on a mission in southeastern Afghanistan.
