Summary: South African AIDS activist who made a powerful impact on public perceptions of the country's AIDS pandemic as well as it's effects on mothers and their children with HIV when he first came to public attention in 1997 after a suburban Johannesburg primary school refused to accept him as a pupil because of his HIV-positive status he'd received from birth, in which the incident caused a furor at the highest political level where South Africa's Constitution forbids discrimination on grounds of medical status, but the school later reversed its decision.
