Summary: Scottish politician who served as a member of the Scottish National Party as well as the Scottish Parliament, who had first been elected to the House of Commons in 1974 representing the Scottish district of East Dunbartonshire and was re-elected to the parliament in 1987 before she stood for the leadership of the SNP in 1990 but lost to Alex Salmond despite the backing of many prominent SNP members (such as Jim Sillars).
