former U.S. Marine who made headlines in September 1995 when he was among three American U.S. servicemen convicted of raping a 12-year-old Japanese schoolgirl they abducted from a street corner in northern Okinawa outside Camp Hansen where they were stationed in a crime that sparked mass protests against the U.S. military and led to further debate over the continued presence of U.S. forces in Japan in the late 1990's after the United States and Japan signed a bilateral agreement in 1996 to reduce the amount of land on Okinawa covered by U.S. bases by 21 percent (the bases covered one-fifth of the island at the time), but who had claimed he did not rape the girl and was sentenced to six years in prison.
