Summary: Australian veteran firefighter and member of the Arthurs Creek and Srathewen Brigade at the local Country Fire Authority on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia who had been hospitalized on life support in critical condition for nearly two weeks from severe burns he received in a series of bushfires that ignited or were burning across the Australian state of Victoria on February 7, 2009 killing at least 170 people including his 32-year-old son Danny Shepherd and also seriously injured more than 400 others after he was found by CFA volunteers lying next to his vehicle while trying to escape the blaze in separate vehicles when he and his son were trapped by the firestorm in the centre of Strathewen near the Kinglake West area during extreme weather conditions, in which it became one of the worst bushfire disasters ever recorded in Australian history that has become widely referred to as Black Saturday.
