Summary: leader of the Northern Ireland's UUP (Ulster Unionist Party) considered as a polarizing force in the battle between Catholics and Protestants in that country during the 1970's who became the leader of the Protestant pro-British party after opposing the 1973 Sinningdale peace agreement, which proposed a sharing of power between the factions, but who in later years changed his hard-line view and espoused a power-sharing coalition with moderate Catholics.
