Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, Alabama and won a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Jimmy Carter in 1980, who in 1959 became the first Greek Orthodox emissary in more than 400 years to meet with Roman Catholic Pope John XXII and was regarded as a dean of religious leaders in the U.S.
