black president of the Vietnam Veterans of America from 1997 to 2001
who appeared before Congress to seek improved health care for veterans
and opposed spending cuts for smoking-related illnesses, who worked to
alleviate homelessness among veterans and to recruit more blacks into
the organiazation's predominantly white membership, and who served in a
delegation appointed by President Bill Clinton to go to Vietnam and
investigate the PoW/MiA issue.
