Summary: Australian nurse and author who had been held captive by Japanese soldiers in the Dutch East Indies for several years during World War II as among one of the remaining survivors of the sinking of Vyner Brooke merchant ship that was bombed by the Japanese aircraft and killed 65 fellow nurses in 1942, but who later wrote about her experiences in the book White Coolies, which partially inspired the film Paradise Road.
