Summary: former president of the Chechen Republic and military leader of rebel forces who took part in a defeat of Russian forces from 1994 to 1996 after which he was named the country's leader, but who unfortunately was unable to keep his country from falling into unrest and anarchy, who went into hiding in 1999 to avoid the violence of returning Russian forces and was eventually blamed for the siege at a Russian school in which over 350 hostages were murdered, and who had survived two previous assassination attempts.
