Artie Shaw

Age: 94

Summary:
jazz clarinetist and bandleader who was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Begin the Beguine, a Cole Porter classic that fueled a press-heated rivalry between Shaw and Benny Goodman for the title "The King of Swing", who was one of the first bandleaders to hire black musicians and recorded many hit songs (some with his orchestra and some with his quartet The Gramercy Five), including Frenesi, Dancing in the Dark, Nightmare, Back Bay Shuffle, Accent-chu-ate the Positive, and Traffic Jam, but then quit at the height of his career in the 1950's to write and fly-fish.
