Summary: playwright, poet, and author whose most acclaimed theater piece is the 1975 Tony Award-nominated play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf, which describes the racism, sexism, violence, and rape experienced by seven black women and it played some 750 performances on Broadway (only the second play by a black woman after A Raising in the Sun) and was turned into a feature film by Tyler Perry starring Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Ross, Kerry Washington, and Janet Jackson.
