former major league baseball umpire whose career ended when he was shot and partly paralyzed in 1991 after intervening in a robbery outside a Dallas restaurant while he was in his 15th season as an American League umpire with a reputation as one of the best callers of strikes and balls, who never umpired again but despite the medical prognosis that it was unlikely he would walk again (he eventually walked with only a cane), and who was hired by Major League Baseball in 2000 as an umpire supervisor in a position he held until 2017.
