Summary: landscape architect who was the creator of the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, California when she began the xeric garden in the 1950's on land originally purchased by successful publisher and historian Hubert Howe Bancroft, the grandfather of her husband Philip Bancroft, Jr., who gained international recognition for her pioneering work in horticulture demonstrating that a dry garden in the heart of a busy urban, inland corridor could be lush, diverse, and striking in design, whose garden became the first in the United States to be preserved by The Garden Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving private gardens for public use, and has been open to the public since 1992.
