Maltese social campaigner and chairman of the Malta Humanist Association who was an opinion writer in a number of local newspapers such as the Times of Malta and also played a leading role in various campaigns for separation of church and state including the introduction of divorce, same-sex civil unions, and emergency contraception long before such views became mainstream in the predominately Catholic country, and whose campaign for freedom of expression against Malta's actively-used 'blasphemy' laws won victory last year with the abolition of the crime of "vilification of religion".
