Northern Irish scientist and vice chancellor of Queen's University Belfast best remembered for his contribution to improving cancer treatment in both parts of Ireland who had led the university through a period of decline in higher education funding in Northern Ireland with a strategic plan known as Vision 2020, which aimed to increase the number of international and postgraduate students at QUB and the research income attracted by the university stating that his ambition was to make the Belfast college to become an "international powerhouse", who became the 12th vice-chancellor in the university's history when he was appointed in March 2014 and was regarded as one of the world's leading cancer researchers.
