Puerto Rican baseball player who became the first Puerto Rican position player in the major leagues when he made his debut with the 1943 Brooklyn Dodgers by helping to create a path for the dozens of Puerto Rican ballplayers who have made a major impact on the game, but who played mostly outfield and arrived at Ebbets Field a year after right-handed pitcher Hiram Bithorn became the first Puerto Rican major league player when he joined the Chicago Cubs.
