German sailor who was abducted and held hostage for three months by ISIS-affiliated Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippines on November 6, 2016 after his female companion Sabine Merz was found shot dead aboard their abandoned yacht while the couple were sailing on a cruise in the dangerous waters off neighboring Malaysia's Sabah state, and whose captors demanded $854,000 from the Philippine government, but the government had a no-ransom policy despite a deadline had been set and was not paid for his release.
