British political researcher and charity campaigner who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS) while working as director of research for the Better Together campaign that took place during the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014 and went on to campaign to raise awareness of the condition, which has drawn support from across the UK political spectrum and whose fundraising efforts have raised more than 530,000 towards research into motor neurone disease by June 2016.
