Italian politician and former president of the Campania region from 1979 to 1980 who directed reconstruction efforts in Campania devastated by the 1980 earthquake in the Irpinia region and was key figure in the former Christian Democratic party, who was kidnapped by the Red Brigades at his home in Naples, Italy on April 27, 1981 during a shootout that killed his two-man police escort and was held captive for 89 days in circumstances which remain a mystery to this day, but who was released after a controversial deal with the Camorra mafia when the Christian Democrats negotiated with the terrorists for his release.
