Summary:
freestyle swimmer who in 1975 at 17 years of age broke Jim Montgomery's 12-day-old 100-meter freestyle world record that had previously been held by legendary Olympian Mark Spitz while representing Pine Crest High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at an Amateur Athletic Union swimming meet, who also won three gold medals at the 1975 FINA World Championships in Cali, Colombia and went on to lead Tennessee to the 1978 NCAA swimming championship that became the first SEC team to ever win an NCAA team title in men's swimming, but who did not participate in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia because the United States boycotted the event.
