French-born principal dancer for the New York City Ballet for 20 years and former artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet and Boston Ballet considered as a leading ballerina of the 20th century who joined the NYC Ballet in 1958 and danced more than 25 principal roles in a performance career that extended through 1977, but who had performed in over 100 different ballets with works by more than 50 choreographers, including the classics Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo & Juliet, and Cinderella.
