Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles
civil rights leader who was present when Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
was assassinated on a Memphis hotel balcony in 1968 (King went to
Memphis to help striking sanitation workers who were seeking safer
working conditions and better pay) while he and others were about to
leave the Lorraine Motel to go to dinner when a .30-caliber bullet
killed King at about 6 p.m. on April 4, 1968 and who was the subject of
a 2008 documentary short film about the assassination called The Witness: From the Balcony of Room 306, which was nominated for an Oscar.
