former fire commissioner of New York City who rebuilt the city's decimated fire department in the years after the September 11, 2001 attacks while he was commissioner of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) from 2002 to 2010 under mayor Michael Bloomberg and bolstered the spirits of the nation's largest fire department through what the mayor called "its darkest days" with the loss of 340 firefighters at the World Trade Center.
