Summary:
convicted murderer and anti-death penalty activist who was arrested, convicted and sentenced to death for the July 12, 1958 killing of two Mandeville, Louisiana police officers, whom many believed were Klansmen and whose death sentence was converted in 1974 to life without parole after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Furman v. Georgia, which invalidated death penalty convictions in certain circumstances but who was released in 1996 after serving 37 years in prison when the Governor of Louisiana agreed to commute his sentence to 75 years following a lengthy legal battle over his guilt or innocence in the 1958 case.
