Canadian trailblazing politician who was the first person of First Nations status to serve in the federal cabinet after being the first Status Indian elected and serving as a Member of Parliament, who was also a member of Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau's cabinet and became a senator in 1984 but who retired from the Senate in 1998 and was active in the North American Native movement working on a number of issues, including federal voting rights for First Nations.
