former professional football player with the National Football League who had helped to lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1992 and was drafted by the New England Patriots, but who later played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1995 to 1999 and was diagnosed with the neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (or Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2010, and who was president of the Kevin Turner Foundation, which seeks to show the connections between repeated brain trauma and ALS in athletes.
