retired Vermont Roman Catholic bishop who lost his brother David Angell (the Emmy Award-winning TV producer of the sitcom Fraser) in the 9/11 attacks when he was aboard the first plane that struck the World Trade Center, who was bishop from 1992 to 2005 and saw Vermont pass its first-in-the-nation civil union law for same-sex couples, which he opposed but retired after a difficult last five years, and who was outspoken against the death penalty, abortion, and physician-assisted dying.
