Summary:
Dutch historian and Holocaust survivor who wrote several books about the Nazis' Sobibor death camp and founded the Sobibor Foundation in 1999 to keep alive the memory of the camp (he was deported to Sobibor in 1943 and lost 18 relatives at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland), but who had recalled his Sobibor experiences in 2009 and testified at the landmark Munich trial of retired Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk who was accused of serving as a guard there and was convicted of 27,900 counts of accessory to murder but always denied serving as a guard and died before his appeal could be heard.
