widow of civil rights activist and farm labor leader Cesar Chavez (d. 1993), whom she met her husband in the mid-1940's and married him 1948 after he left the Navy as the couple left a comfortable middle-class existence in East Los Angeles to organize farm workers in California's Central Valley in the early 1960's, where her late husband (along with Dolores Huerta) founded the National Farm Workers Assocation, which later became the United Farm Workers.
