lawyer and AIDS activist who turned Bailey House into the nation's largest provider of housing to people with AIDS and a model for similar organizations around the U.S. when she became involved in the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980's while serving as associate general counsel for the New York State Nurses Association with 30,000 members at the time and also became a board member of the AIDS Resource Center that was founded in 1983 to provide housing and other support for homeless people with AIDS, who led the negotiations with the city to acquire the former hotel on Christopher Street in the West Village that became the first group residence for people with AIDS known as Bailey House (later renamed Bailey-Holt House), but who left the nurses' association in 1988 to became the AIDS Resource Center's chief executive officer in a position she held for the next 25 years.
