justice reform activist who was wrongfully convicted in 1984 of the rape and murder of a young white newspaper copy editor named Deborah Sykes but was later exonerated by DNA and other forms of evidence, who served nearly 20 years in prison before he was freed after review and exoneration and who later founded the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice, an advocacy group for the wrongfully convicted.
