Age: 97

Summary:
Brooklyn high school history teacher and activist in the 1950's who unwittingly attracted the attention of Communist-hunting Senator Joseph R. McCarthy when he led a group in a failed effort to indict a policeman who had shot and killed an unarmed black man after a minor traffic accident while he was attending a meeting of the Communist Party in college signing a petition for a radical cause at the time (or merely knowing someone who did either of those things was enough to pique the interest of McCarthy's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations), but who lost his teaching job when he cited the Fifth Amendment after he and other teachers were fired during the McCarthy era until they were reinstated and eventually regained their pension rights in 1972.
