Summary: retired commander of the Turkish Air Force and last surviving member of a junta that led Turkey's 1980 military coup who was one of five members of the military clique that grabbed power on Sept. 12, 1980 ending years of violence and street clashes but unleashing a wave of arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings before he was convicted of crimes against the state in 2014 and sentenced to life imprisonment along with the coup's leader Kenan Evran (who was president until 1989 and died in May 2015 at age 97), but who was freed on medical grounds and was appealing his conviction.
