Summary: retired Minnesota criminal defense attorney who was convicted in late 1963 of hiring a hit man to kill his wife so he could collect nearly $1.1 million in life insurance benefits and was later paroled in 1983 after serving 19 years of a life sentence, in which the case attracted national attention as many Minnesotans came to believe that it had been an inspiration for the 1996 movie Fargo, but filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen denied it.
