artistic director of Young Playwrights, Inc. that was founded in 1981 by Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim to nurture and develop playwrights who had read thousands of plays submitted to the group as part of its annual competition and helped to raise more than $10 million over 20 years to keep the group going when she launched an advanced playwriting workshop and produced over 15 off-Broadway productions of the Young Playwrights Festival at venues including the New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizons, the Lucille Lortel Theatre, and the Cherry Lane Theatre, but who also produced a Broadway concert revue celebrating Sondheim's 75th birthday featuring artists including Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Lansbury, Neil Patrick Harris, Anne Hathaway, Patti Lupone, Bernadette Peters, and Elaine Stritch.
