NBC news correspondent who escaped from the infamous Jonestown massacre in Guyana on November 18, 1978 when more than 900 Americans died in the mass murder-suicide of Jim Jones's followers including U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan, who was struck on the head covering riots in Watts and Berkeley in the 1960's and covered the kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patty Hearst and the seizure of a school bus full of children and a driver in Chowchilla, Calif. in 1976, and who was later a producer of Entertainment Tonight.
