New York City police detective who was hit with 14 rounds of bullets in a shooting
more than three decades ago that left his partner dead and sent
shockwaves through the police department when he was shot multiple
times by two radical gunmen while responding to a burglary in the St.
Albans neighborhood of Queens, New York on April 16, 1981 whose partner Officer John
Scarangella succumbed to gunshot wounds he received after being gunned
down by members of a Black Panther Party splinter group during the
violent shooting, but who survived the ambush and suffered injuries
that forced him to retire.
