Summary: president of the University of San Francisco from 1977 to 1991 who presided over its resurgence and a temporary shutdown of the university's Division I basketball program in 1982 after numerous recruiting violations, but who had restored the program under new leadership and more stringent guidelines in 1985, and whose main achievements at USF was getting the school out of debt and growing its endowment from $4.6 million in 1976 to $38.7 million in 1991.
