Summary: co-founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) who was believed to be the last living member of the inaugural Freedom Ride (the volatile, sometimes violent bus trip through the South by racially mixed group in 1947 to test a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that barred segregation on interstate transit), who as a white Methodist minister founded CORE in 1942 with two black colleagues James Farmer (d. 1999) and Bayard Rustin (d. 1987) and others.
