pilot who took part in a mass breakout from a German prison-of-war camp
during World War II remembered as the Great Escape, in which the escape
was the subject of a 1963 Hollywood movie called The Great Escape
starring Steve McQueen (a work of artistic license that Royle loathed),
but who along with former squadron leader Dick Churchill of Great
Britain were only one of the last two remaining survivors of the 76 men
who escaped from Stalag Luft III near Sagan about 100 miles southeast
of Berlin, Germany.
