Summary: Egyptian-born actor who rose to international fame with his first English-speaking role starring opposite Peter O'Toole in 1962's Lawrence of Arabia and earned an Oscar supporting-actor nomination for the role of Sherif Ali, the tribal leader with whom T.E. Lawrence teams up to help lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire (the film won numerous Oscars, including best picture and director), but who demonstrated his versatility in 1965 playing the leading role of a doctor-poet who endures decades of Russian history including World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution in Doctor Zhivago, who reportedly received 3,000 proposals of marriage after the film debuted and also played heartbreaker Nicky Arnstein in the 1968 Barbra Steisand vehicle Funny Girl that is based on the life of entertainer Fanny Brice.
